PROTOCOL 19 – PUBLIC RESEARCH DIVISION

The Origin Story Retrospective

Interrogate how it actually started

LAB RECORD – RUN AT WILL EST. DURATION: 45 MINUTES
Materials
two subjects, the truth this time
Objective
Recover the real origin story from underneath the dinner-party version. Every bond ships a polished founding myth within eighteen months. The unpolished one is better. It always is.

Procedure

  1. Each subject tells the official version once, together, the way you'd tell it at a wedding. Get it out of the system.

  2. Now depose the witnesses separately – answer without conferring:

    • What was your genuine first impression, including the unflattering part you've been sanding off?
    • When did you first pretend to be more casual about this than you were?
    • What almost made this not happen – the flaked plan, the near-miss, the thing you've never fully admitted?
    • What did you tell your group chat that night, verbatim, to the best of your recollection?
  3. Compare depositions. Discrepancies are not errors; they are the two camera angles the myth was compressed from.

  4. Draft the revised edition: official version, plus the two best recovered details. This is now the canonical text. The Lab suggests debuting it at the next wedding you attend.

Expected results

The recovered version is funnier, less flattering, and noticeably more romantic than the official one. This result replicates across nearly every pair we've run it on.

Findings worth keeping? Some of what surfaces in a protocol – the story, the detail they'd be embarrassed you noticed – is exactly the raw material the synthesis division turns into a finished song about them. The Lab merely notes the pipeline exists.
